Hungry Dog

How is is that dogs know how to tell time?
Every afternoon at 4:00, Sophie dances around for her afternoon snack - a raw carrot, which serves as her pre-dinner appetizer. Then, at exactly 6:13, she comes to me again, wiggling and whining for her half cup of food - the small dinner that will tide her over until she wakes me for breakfast at exactly 6:30 the next day. Obviously, her sense of time is much better than mine.

Our last dog, Belle, (another fat lab), always knew when her daily walk was due. She did the same eager dance until I took her out. When I got Sophie, I decided to randomize her walk times, so she wouldn't annoy me about taking her out on such a pre-set schedule. I always kept her morning walks the same, but varied them in the evening - either before or after dinner - just to mix things up. It worked. She never knew when to expect that walk. How I wish I had used the same strategy on Sophie's feeding times. When it comes to food, is shameless and bold: She has even nudged my hand off the computer mouse to get my attention. Of course, it's hard to scold her because I understand the feeling…. totally!
